America's second oldest horse racing track, the Fair Grounds has been a New Orleans staple since 1852. We are a premiere entertainment venue presenting thoroughbred & exotic animal races, slots, video poker and simulcasting year-round. Located in New Orleans, Fair Grounds operates a slot-machine gaming facility and 13 off-track betting parlors throughout southeast Louisiana.

JOB SUMMARY

Supervises the workouts each morning on the main track and training track. Escorts, on horseback, starters to the post and assists in returning of all horses to the unsaddling area and/or assists in the control of any horse which might cause injury to a jockey, or others.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Working on horseback ensures that the field arrives at the starting gate at the scheduled post time.
  • Present on the racing strip, mounted and ready to assist in the control of any unruly horse or to always recapture any loose horse horses are permitted on the racing strip for exercising, training or racing.
  • Ensure that all people exercise horses during training hours or accompanying horses to the starting gate during racing hours wear a protective helmet and vest.
  • Maintains constant radio contact with the Stewards from the time the horses leave the paddock until the start of each race.
  • Ensures that exercise personnel follow track safety rules and report any person(s) who refuse to comply.

 

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Requited to obtain Louisiana Racing License. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
