America's second oldest horse racing track, the Fair Grounds has been a New Orleans staple since 1852. We are a premiere entertainment venue presenting thoroughbred & exotic animal races, slots, video poker and simulcasting year-round. Located in New Orleans, Fair Grounds operates a slot-machine gaming facility and 13 off-track betting parlors throughout southeast Louisiana.

JOB SUMMARY

To play the bugle approximately 8 minutes before the start of every race.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The primary duty is to sound the call before each race, which notifies attendees and jockeys that the post parade is about to begin.
  • On occasion, the bugler may be asked to play other musical selections, such as the national anthem, for special events or stakes races.
  • A bugler often serves as an entertaining figure for the crowd. They may interact with patrons, take photos, or play other songs between races to keep the audience entertained.
  • The bugler is typically required to wear a traditional uniform, often in the style of a 19th-century coachman or fox hunt bugler, complete with a distinctive hat. 

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Must be 21 years or older. Must be able to obtain a Racing License from Louisiana Racing Commission.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • The bugler must be a highly skilled brass musician, typically a trumpet player. The music is an important part of the racing tradition, and a high-quality performance is expected.
  • The musician must be proficient with different types of instruments used for fanfares. While some may use a traditional bugle, others use a trumpet or herald trumpet.
  • Buglers are expected to maintain a professional and entertaining demeanor while on the job, as they are a public-facing representative of the racetrack.
  • The job requires the bugler to be present for all live racing dates set forth by the racetrack, which may include weekends and holidays, and to play on a strict schedule before every race.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORKING CONDITIONS

  • The employee will be required to sit for extended periods of time.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may also be required to stand, walk, use hands to finger reach, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.
  • The employee may be asked to occasionally lift up to 20 lbs.
  • The employee may be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays
  • The noise level in the work environment is moderate
