JOB SUMMARY
Responsible for providing accurate, engaging, and timely race calls and announcements for live racing events. Delivers clear and professional commentary before, during, and after races to enhance the guest experience while ensuring accurate dissemination of racing information. This is a seasonal position for the summer race meet at Colonial Downs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Calls live horse races with accuracy, clarity, and enthusiasm, providing real-time descriptions of race action for guests on-site and via broadcast.
• Delivers pre-race, in-race, and post-race announcements, including scratches, changes, results, and official race information.
• Reviews racing forms, past performances, and program materials to prepare for accurate race calls.
• Coordinates with the Racing Office, Stewards, and production/broadcast teams to ensure accurate and timely information is communicated.
• Announces race day events, promotions, and guest information as directed.
• Maintains a consistent and professional on-air presence that enhances the overall racing experience.
• Assists with production elements such as recorded announcements, promotional reads, and special event messaging.
• Ensures compliance with all racing commission regulations and company policies regarding public announcements.
• Responds to inquiries from racing officials and internal departments as needed.
• Maintains confidentiality and integrity in all aspects of racing operations.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
• Exceptional verbal communication skills with clear diction and strong projection.
• Ability to call races accurately at high speed with attention to detail.
• Strong knowledge of Thoroughbred racing, terminology, and race structure.
• Ability to remain calm and composed under pressure in a fast-paced, live environment.
• Strong preparation and research skills.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with multiple departments, including racing operations and broadcast teams.
• Professional presence with the ability to engage and inform a large audience.
• Proficiency with audio equipment, microphones, and broadcast systems is preferred.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
• High school diploma or equivalent required; degree in communications, broadcasting, or related field preferred.
• Prior experience as a race caller, announcer, or in sports broadcasting preferred.
• Experience in Thoroughbred racing or a similar live sporting environment strongly preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to perform live announcements or race calls required (audition may be required).
• Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.
• Must obtain and maintain a Virginia Racing Commission racing license.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORKING CONDITIONS
• The Team Member will be required to sit, stand, and remain in a fixed position for extended periods during race meets.
• While performing the duties of this job, the Team Member is frequently required to speak clearly and continuously for extended periods; use hands to operate equipment; and communicate effectively.
• The Team Member may occasionally move throughout the facility, including climbing stairs to access announcing booths or viewing areas.
• The Team Member may be required to work long hours, including early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays, based on racing schedules.
• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
• The work environment may include exposure to outdoor weather conditions, crowds, and high levels of activity associated with live racing.
