JOB SUMMARY
Responsible for determining and verifying the official order of finish for second and third place in Thoroughbred horse races to ensure accuracy, fairness, and compliance with racing regulations. This is a seasonal position for the March race meet at Colonial Downs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Observes live races from the designated judging stand to determine the order of finish for second and third place.
- Utilizes visual observation and available video replay systems to make accurate and timely determinations.
- Communicates observations, decisions, and any discrepancies to the Stewards immediately.
- Assists in reviewing photo finishes and replay footage when necessary.
- Maintains focus and impartial judgment throughout each race.
- Ensures compliance with state racing commission rules, track policies, and judging procedures.
- Participates in pre-race briefings, post-race reviews, and regulatory inspections as required.
- Maintains confidentiality and integrity in all matters related to race judging.
- Reports equipment malfunctions or visibility issues that could affect judging accuracy.
- Resolves issues within the scope of authority and escalates matters beyond scope to the Stewards.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Exceptional attention to detail and strong visual acuity.
- Ability to make quick, accurate decisions under pressure.
- Strong knowledge of Thoroughbred racing rules and judging procedures.
- Excellent verbal communication skills.
- Ability to maintain impartiality and professionalism at all times.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of an officiating team.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Prior experience in Thoroughbred racing officiating or race judging preferred.
- Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.
- Must obtain and maintain a Virginia Racing Commission racing license.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORKING CONDITIONS
- The Team Member will be required to sit or stand for extended periods during race programs.
- While performing the duties of this job, the Team Member is frequently required to see clearly at distance; sit; stand; talk or hear; and use hands to operate communication or replay equipment.
- The Team Member may be required to work long hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, based on racing schedules.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
- The work environment may include exposure to outdoor weather conditions and varying visibility conditions.
