JOB SUMMARY
Sells and cashes wagering vouchers for guest use at self-serve terminals. This is a seasonal position for the 3-day race meet at Colonial Downs scheduled for March 12-14, 2026. Interested applicants must be available to work the entire race meet, plus additional days for training as needed.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides next-level guest service to internal and external guests. Demonstrates #AddLife culture in all interactions with guests and co-workers.
- Responsible for fostering an environment of support and motivation for Team Members.
- Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information in accordance with established procedures with company policy and state regulations.
- Operates under strict rules and regulations as postulated by the Virginia Racing Commission (VRC) and Colonial Downs Group, LLC. regarding guest service and money handling.
- Operates a mutuel window providing courteous service and conduct with moral and ethical standards. Must refrain from personal wagering.
- Uses a teller terminal (ticket issuing machine) in tandem with a money drawer.
- Accepts wagers and operates with due care in issuing the mutuel ticket so that it reflects the correct wager, pool, race, runner and racetrack.
- Cashes winning tickets, determining a ticket’s validity and value, by running tickets through the ticket reader on the teller’s terminal.
- Accepts full responsibility for the money handling in the issuance and cashing of mutuel tickets, draws and returns from the money room and the liability for any shortage that may occur.
- Monitors guests to prohibit minors from wagering.
- Yields the handling of a guest complaint to immediate supervisor.
- Resolves problems that are within the position's scope of authority and recommends courses of action to resolve problems that are beyond the scope of authority to the position’s supervisor.
- Keeps position supervisor informed of relevant activities.
- Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Ability to provide friendly, professional, and efficient service in a fast-paced, guest-facing environment
- Clear verbal communication skills to explain wagering options, payouts, and procedures to guests
- Ability to remain calm, courteous, and accurate when interacting with guests during high-volume racing periods
- Demonstrated ability to accurately handle large volumes of cash, tickets, and vouchers
- Strong attention to detail to ensure precise ticket issuance, payouts, and change-making
- Ability to balance drawer and complete end-of-shift reconciliations with minimal discrepancies
- Basic math skills, including addition, subtraction, and quick mental calculations
- Ability to read, interpret, and process pari-mutuel wagers and odds
- Comfort using computerized wagering terminals, ticket scanners, and POS systems
- Dependable attendance and punctuality, including availability to work days, evenings, weekends, and holidays
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma or GED required
- Prior cash-handling, customer service, or retail experience preferred
- Experience working in a fast-paced, guest-facing environment preferred
- Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
- Basic computer skills and ability to learn pari-mutuel wagering systems and terminals
- Ability to obtain and maintain Virginia Racing Commission racing license required
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORKING CONDITIONS
- Ability to stand or sit for extended periods during assigned shifts.
- Ability to handle repetitive hand and wrist movements associated with ticketing and cash handling.
- Ability to work in environments that may include noise, crowds, secondhand smoke, and varying temperatures depending on the assigned station and guest volume.
- Ability to work long hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
