JOB SUMMARY
The Horse Identifier is responsible for verifying the identity of all horses entered to race. This role ensures compliance with state racing regulations and industry standards by confirming each horse's official identification through physical markings, digital tattoos, and registration documents. The Horse Identifier plays a critical role in maintaining the integrity of racing operations and ensuring fair competition. This is a seasonal position available until approximately September 13, 2025.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Positively identify each horse entering the paddock, receiving barn, or designated area for racing or workouts.
- Compare physical markings, digital tattoo numbers, and registration papers against records.
- Document and report any discrepancies in markings or identification to the Stewards and/or Racing Secretary.
- Collaborate with regulatory officials, veterinarians, trainers, and other racing personnel to ensure accurate horse identification.
- Maintain and secure all registration papers and electronic records for horses stabled on the grounds.
- Monitor barn areas or receiving barns as required for pre-race identification and logistics.
- Assist with updating information in racing office software and databases.
- Adhere to and enforce state racing commission regulations and track policies.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Racing Secretary or regulatory authority.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Thorough understanding of horse markings, breeds, and registration identification (including digital tattoos and microchips).
- Knowledge of Thoroughbred racing rules, procedures, and standards.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to observe subtle differences in physical markings.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to work cooperatively with trainers, veterinarians, racing officials, and team members.
- Strong integrity, professionalism, and discretion when dealing with sensitive information.
- Basic computer proficiency, especially with racing software and databases.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Prior experience working in the horse racing industry is preferred.
- Familiarity with Thoroughbred registration and identification processes is highly desirable.
- Training or certification in horse identification preferred.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Virginia Racing Commission (VRC) racing license.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORKING CONDITIONS
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods in barn areas and paddocks.
- Must be able to handle and be in close proximity to large animals in a fast-paced and sometimes unpredictable environment.
- Must be able to bend, crouch, reach, and lift up to 25 pounds.
- Work is performed outdoors and in barns, with exposure to varying weather conditions, dust, noise, and animal odors.
- Must be available to work flexible hours, including early mornings, weekends, holidays, and race days.
