JOB SUMMARY

Responsible for overseeing jockey weight compliance and equipment verification before and after races to ensure adherence to racing regulations and maintain the integrity of racing operations. This is a seasonal position for the March race meet at Colonial Downs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Weighs jockeys and their equipment prior to and following each race to ensure compliance with assigned weights and applicable racing regulations.
  • Ensures all equipment, including saddles, pads, and personal gear, meets regulatory requirements and is properly accounted for.
  • Maintains accurate and detailed records of weights, equipment checks, and any discrepancies.
  • Reports overweight, underweight, equipment irregularities, or other violations to the Stewards immediately.
  • Communicates clearly and professionally with jockeys, trainers, Stewards, and racing officials regarding weight assignments and procedures.
  • Ensures the scale room is secured, orderly, and operated in accordance with racing commission rules.
  • Maintains confidentiality and integrity in all matters related to race operations and jockey weigh-ins.
  • Assists Stewards with investigations, inquiries, and documentation as required.
  • Attends required briefings, race meetings, and regulatory inspections.
  • Ensures compliance with all state racing commission rules, track policies, and operational procedures.
  • Resolves issues within the scope of authority and escalates matters beyond scope to the Stewards or Racing Secretary.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to accurately record and verify information.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and professional demeanor.
  • Ability to remain calm and focused in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
  • Strong understanding of Thoroughbred racing rules, jockey weight requirements, and equipment standards.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
  • Basic computer and recordkeeping skills.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Prior experience in Thoroughbred racing operations or as a Clerk of Scales preferred.
  • Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Must obtain and maintain a Virginia Racing Commission racing license.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORKING CONDITIONS

  • The Team Member will be required to stand and walk for extended periods during race days.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the Team Member is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to handle equipment and paperwork; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.
  • The Team Member may be required to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • The Team Member may be required to work long hours, including early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays, based on racing schedules.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
  • The work environment may include exposure to outdoor weather conditions, crowds, and high levels of activity associated with live racing.
