JOB SUMMARY
The Director of Mutuels directs activities of the Mutuel Department to ensure an efficient and economic operation, while affirming the satisfaction of employees and guests.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Director is expected to work all live race days, and all days necessary to ensure live race days are properly set up and dismantled. This will include long hours, including weekends and holidays. The workload will be the greatest in the months leading up to the Kentucky Derby. The employee will work with Mutuel Department managers to coordinate managerial coverage of simulcasting days.
- Directs activities of workers in the Mutuel Department through the determination of the daily workforce size in assigning of tellers in compliance with union contract. Supervises tellers at various divisions, ensuring their compliance with operating rules and appropriate relations with customers.
- Develops Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), policies and rules for the department and enforces same.
- Partner with AML Compliance Officer to ensure proper procedures are in place and employees are adhering to compliance standards and deadlines are being met.
- Supervise all training programs and evaluate the performance of new hires to ensure continued employment.
- Reviews productivity of tellers on a daily basis including total transactions, overages and shortages and log tapes and discusses problem areas with individual employees.
- Ensures that the responsibilities, authorities and accountability of all direct subordinates are defined and understood.
- Investigates employee complaints and grievances with division supervisors and recommends appropriate courses of action to Human Resources and Vice President of Mutuels and Special Projects.
- Serves as liaison between various departments regarding post-times, betting formats, policies.
- Sets post times to ensure enough betting time without prolonging day coordinating with import simulcast schedules.
- During live racing, verify scratches daily and approve tote race cards.
- Determines that the correct order of finish of each race is entered properly into computer by tote personnel.
- Responsible for accounting and balancing of monies as a result of wagering.
- Gathers daily statistics and maintains files.
- Assists in daily calculation of department payroll and pension reports.
- Submit SEIU Pension funds monthly.
- Generates daily settlements with simulcasting outlets (whether importing or exporting races), maintains records and works with the Finance Department pertaining to reconciliation with these facilities.
- Coordinates duties that pertain to simulcast wagering.
- Develops and distributes internal and external communications.
- Analyzes departmental budget request to identify areas in which reductions can be made, and allocates operating budget.
- Coordinates equipment needed for efficient operation of department.
- Assists in development and implementation of new wagers.
- Continuously looks for ways to improve productivity and customer service in all facets of the Mutuel Department
- Ensures that all organization activities and operations are carried out in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and laws governing business operations.
- Serves on company committee for labor union negotiations.
- Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Manages both full-time and part-time Mutuel employees. Oversees the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of this department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or a minimum of two year’s related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
