Title:  Barn Worker, Quarantine

JOB SUMMARY

The Barn Worker, Quarantine supports the hands-on operations of the Kentucky Import Center quarantine barns located on the Churchill Downs Racetrack backside. The position provides daily care and monitoring for Thoroughbreds and other equine breeds undergoing USDA-regulated quarantine and/or isolation after entering the United States. This part-time, as-needed role requires prior equine experience and the ability to work 8-10 hour overnight and morning shifts in a barn environment while following all applicable quarantine procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Equine Care & Monitoring

• Monitor horses for unusual equine behavior or signs of distress, including colic or coming off feed, and immediately alert management.

• Assist with taking routine temperatures as directed.

• Ensure all horses have clean, full water buckets at all times.

• Feed the appropriate grain to each horse based on the owner's direction.

• Hand-walk horses for 30-45 minutes at a time as required.

Quarantine Operations & Facility Care

• Follow all USDA-mandated quarantine rules and procedures while onsite.

• Maintain a clean facility before, during, and after each quarantine period.

• Maintain the company's reputation through professional conduct and compliance with applicable requirements.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

REGULATORY

Ability to obtain and maintain a Kentucky racing license and successfully complete all applicable background check requirements. Must possess a valid drivers license and must be at least 18 years of age.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
• Prior equine experience required.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Strong communication skills with demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across different departments. 
• Equine work history and general equine health knowledge required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORKING CONDITIONS

• Ability to walk; use hands to reach, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.
• Regular standing, walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, and moving throughout the facility to support quarantine operations.
• Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, rotating schedules, and extended hours as required to support incoming quarantine loads.
• Ability to perform effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
• The noise level in the work environment is moderate.

This work is performed at Churchill Downs Racetrack (“CDRT”), the world’s most legendary racetrack, has been the home of The Kentucky Derby, the longest continually held annual sporting event in the United States, since 1875. Located in Louisville, CDRT features a series of themed race days during Derby Week, including the Kentucky Oaks, and conducts Thoroughbred horse racing during three race meets in Spring, September and Fall. CDRT is located on 175 acres and has a one-mile dirt track, a 7/8-mile turf track, a stabling area, and provides seating for approximately 60,000 guests. The stable area has barns sufficient to accommodate 1,400 horses and a 114-room dormitory for backstretch personnel. CDRT also has a year-round simulcast wagering facility.
