Churchill Downs Racetrack (“CDRT”), the world’s most legendary racetrack, has been the home of The Kentucky Derby, the longest continually held annual sporting event in the United States, since 1875. JOB SUMMARY
The Backside Maintenance Laborer performs a variety of carpentry, landscaping, cleaning, painting, masonry, driving, and other duties as necessary to ensure upkeep of the racetrack, turf track, and related facilities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Utilize carpentry, painting, masonry, and other skills to maintain the racetrack, turf track, and related facilities as appropriate.
- Drive water trucks and tractors pulling harrows on the racetrack.
- Experience spraying and applying fungicides and fertilizers.
- Must be able to operate equipment such as mowers, trimmers, chemical sprayers, various hand tools and related equipment.
- Assist with regular turf maintenance, planting, cleaning, other related grounds maintenance.
- Participate in cross training to enhance knowledge and skills in various maintenance operations.
- Will be required to participate in safety training and pass associated quizzes.
- Other duties, as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Mechanical Experience
- Certified welder preferred
- Ability to operate maintenance equipment including but not limited to water trucks, and tractors pulling harrows on the training track.
- Candidate will be tested to demonstrate their skills, expertise, and ability to perform requested duties as required by the manager.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
- Must submit successfully to a DMV and background check.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Five (5) years of demonstrated experience in maintenance trades including but not limited to carpentry, painting, masonry, and other basic maintenance skills.
- High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) is required. Additional education or training such as trade vocational school in maintenance subjects and certificates and other training records are a plus.

- The employee will be required to sit for extended periods of time
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee may also be required to stand: walk; use hands to finger reach, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.
- The employee may be asked to occasionally lift up to 20 lbs.
