ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
FUNCTION
The Track Superintendent directly interacts with Company leadership, owners, trainers, and other stakeholders to ensure the operating excellence of turf track and dirt track surfaces at Ellis Entertainment, LLC. The Track Superintendent plans, directs, and coordinates all activities related to track maintenance, safety, and regulations, ensuring the integrity of horseracing, Ellis Entertainment, LLC., and Churchill Downs Inc. This position reports directly to the Director of Racing.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Determine priorities, projects, and tasks needed to ensure continuous care, maintenance, and operating excellence of racetrack surfaces and other areas as required.
Ensure that all racing surfaces are safe and compliant for horse racing activities. This includes procuring proper materials for the track surfaces, correctly applying those materials, and properly watering, grading, and preparing all track surfaces.
Maintain the main dirt track and turf track in optimal conditions. Harrows, waters, rolls, and floats track between races and as needed for equine training sessions.
Monitors and documents composition level, depth of surface, and cushion of the tracks as applicable.
Monitors and documents the moisture content and irrigation of the turf track and watering and moisture content of the dirt track.
Document protocols utilized to manage, test, and ensure preventative and ongoing maintenance of all racing surfaces.
Ensure timely and accurate reporting and compliance per the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA).
Actively participate in track policies and processes designed to uphold standards and practices that support equine safety, including all Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) accreditation standards.
Propose, plan, and implement innovative methods and tactics designed to improve operations, minimize costs, and maximize the use of materials and assets.
Collaborate with leadership to define and determine capital projects, budgets, and other priorities related to track management and equine safety.
Procure tools, equipment, supplies, and other essential items in accordance with Company policies and procedures.
Operate and maintain all equipment (tractors, loaders, graders, etc.) necessary to prepare dirt and turf surfaces for racing and training.
Hire, train, and develop team members to build cross-functional knowledge of operational processes, industry standards, emerging technologies, and strategies.
Consistently assess the skill levels of new hires in accordance with job classifications and skill requirements.
Collaborate with the Director of Racing, Racing Secretary, and other leadership as necessary to finalize decisions related to track operations (race card, surface, etc.).
Comply with local, state, and federal regulations pertaining to hours, breaks, working conditions, safety, and other protections as required.
Understand and effectively articulate the Company’s position on gaming, medication, testing, betting, and other issues as advised.
Assist with leadership efforts to build and cultivate a diverse and inclusive workforce.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree, University certification, or a minimum of 7-10 years of experience or training. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be deemed acceptable.
