Title:  Paddock Blacksmith - Seasonal

To administer Farrier duties to all horses that has been presented in the paddock for racing and conduct repairs in view of public in paddock.  Monitor condition and legal requirements of horse’s shoes.  Provide information to the media for posting.  To perform any duties to help support and promote Turfway Park’s racing program during its race card.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Inspect the horses in the paddock area and ensure they s wearing the appropriate shoes
  • Replace blown or reattach loose shoes
  • Relay shoe status to media to be released to the public
  • Provide any/all assistance and duties as directed by outriders, racing officials, stewards, and Turfway Park management to help improve the overall racing product.
  • Taking the rail down and putting back up in between races.

 

ADDITIONAL POSITION INFORMATION:

Qualification Requirements:

  • Must be able to obtain blacksmith license
  • Must be able to speak English
  • Must be approved by Kentucky Horse Racing Authority
  • Prior knowledge and experience with horses and horse racing
  • Must be able to communication to trainers and paddock personnel

 

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to sit, walk, speak, hear, see, stoop, kneel, crouch, pull and lift up to 75 lbs.

 

Work Environment:

  • Outside, typically Paddock area
  • Position works directly with horses
